About Gernas Tastaka

We Were Born from Anxiety & Hope, Living and Growing with the Spirit of Volunteerism.

Gernas Tastaka is a civil society movement to improve the quality of basic education, especially Elementary Schools (SD)/Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) in Indonesia. Gernas Tastaka was launched on November 10, 2018, with one focus, namely the Eradication of Mathematical Illiteracy.

This movement was born out of deep anxiety over the quality of Indonesian students' learning outcomes in mathematics. As seen in the 2018 PISA report, the average score of Indonesian students is 379, below the OECD average — placing Indonesia at the 7th position from the bottom out of 79 participating countries, and a decline compared to PISA 2015 (386).

Gernas Tastaka accompanies elementary school classroom teachers to be able to teach mathematics in class in a way that is"Logical, Simple, Fundamental, and Contextual". Starting from gathering intellectual-academic resources, designing comprehensive training plans, to mobilizing volunteers to help teachers improve the quality of learning through face-to-face training full of simulations.

"We cannot reject destiny, but we can make a change. No matter how small. There is no time to stand still. Because change is a necessity. Let's Move!" — Ahmad Rizali, Founder of Gernas Tastaka
